All the benefits, none of the work

It seems that the LiveJournal folks are implementing Jabber functionality for all users. At this rate, by this time next year they’ll be doing most of the basic stuff on my list for community management packages. (Though I doubt they’ll ever manage to do pseudonym management. They just aren’t set up for it on the back end.)

I need to poke around their most recent package for installing your own LJ-based system and see if it includes the Jabber server or if that’s a stand-alone deal. If it’s included then it should be a simple hack to put something like JWChat in the sidebar. And I’m betting I could take their new notification system and hack it into something very useful for feed-like things.

Well, not me specifically. But I imagine that I know people who could do such a thing. Which is almsot like having the skills myself.

Anyway, the point of all this is that I think it’s very cool that other people are thinking in the same directions I am. While it would be cool if the LiveJournal folks got the idea from me, it’s much more likely that it’s just an obvious idea. Still, it’s encouraging to see it happening.
