Aging and taste in food

As I grow older, I find my food cravings tend more and more toward ‘healthier’ fare. I wonder if this is pretty common, or if I’m weird. (Not that those are mutually exclusive.)

Case in point: tonight I had some tasty spinach lasagna. Five years ago, I hated spinach lasagna. All that spinach got in the way of the creamy cheese flavor! But tonight, there wasn’t enough spinach. I wanted a bit more of that slightly acidic bite to offset the creamy cheese and the hearty meat.

I also find that I tend to crave more fruits and vegetables than I crave meats and cheeses, whereas just a few years ago I would crave steak (or chicken, or whatever).

This probably isn’t a bad thing. It’s broadening my food horizons, and fruit is super-delicious. It’s also better for me, which helps in the ‘getting into a shape other than “round”‘ department.

It is also, unfortunately, pretty expensive. I go through some pretty large quantities of fruit, and when the fruit’s not in season, it hurts the bank account… Ah well, a small price to pay for delicious!

I’ve found the same thing. Except when I’m stress eating, and then I eat pure crap.

But when I’m happy and healthy and good, I crave lots of healthy foods, whole grains, fruits, and vegies. I tell you, the one thing I miss about Canada that I can’t get here is a good Greek salad.

    Yumm, Greek salad.

My food tastes went through one great sea change when I was around 18, and then a smaller shift some time in my mid-twenties. I don’t know what accounts for that, but it seems to happen to a lot of people.

I love the taste of fresh fruit, but am also allergic to most of it, so I usually just content myself by smelling it. I spent a good ten minutes snorting a nectarine the other day. I guess it is considerably less expensive that way…
