Last year they redistricted the area and I got moved to a new one (without moving). I knew this, but I forgot where they moved me to so I went to my old polling place to see if they had a district list. They did, and they were super-helpful. No hanky-panky or anything. (Of course, this is Alabama. I’d be shocked if they felt the need to pull anything to get a Republican win.)
So I drove over to my new polling place and voted. Now, I haven’t seen the district lines, but if they’re drawn like I imagine they are my new district contains virtually no low-income housing. It’s all upper-middle class neighborhoods. I noticed a number of minorities and a number of poorly dressed people at my old polling place in the two or three minutes it took me to get in and get out. I noticed one black woman, one asian woman, and no one who looked poor at my new polling place.
I don’t even know what to think about this, but it was a bit of a weird moment.
